Same site, same pay!

Late last year the Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle held an Early Learning Summit at which the value of early learning to a child's lifelong development was acknowledged.

Australian Catholic University Lecturer Cathie Harrison addressed the conference on the importance of brain development in the early years and the implications for pedagogy and practice in the field.

The Diocese of Parramatta is developing a new style of school in western Sydney, St Luke's Catholic College, that will offer preschool to Year 12 education on the one campus.

While the IEU acknowledges the support for early childhood education being shown by these dioceses, it is notable that they continue to pay their early childhood teachers less than the school teachers working alongside them, possibly on the same site. In some cases early learning teachers are getting the modern award.

If Catholic education is serious in its support for early childhood education, it needs to support early childhood teachers by paying them the same wages as primary school teachers, thereby showing they truly believe their role is as important as any other teacher.
